Who are the Filipino Migrant Workers?

A significant number of individuals from the Philippines choose to migrate to other countries in search of employment opportunities, and these individuals are commonly referred to as Filipino migrant workers. Often, they endure long working hours for meager compensation while facing challenging and perilous circumstances. Many of them find it difficult to return home and reunite with their families due to the prohibitive costs associated with travel.

Filipino migrant workers play a vital role in the Philippine economy by contributing to its growth. They send a substantial amount of money back to their families, which in turn supports the local economy. In 2017 alone, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) remitted over $26 billion to the Philippines.

Recognizing the significance of these migrant workers, the Philippine government has implemented various policies and programs to provide support. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) offers financial assistance and other essential services to migrant workers, while the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) strives to protect their rights.

Overall, Filipino migrant workers make significant sacrifices to improve their economic prospects and provide for their families. They endure challenging circumstances abroad while contributing to the Philippine economy and supporting their loved ones back home.

When is the National Migrant Worker’s Day?

National Migrant Workers’ Day is celebrated annually on June 7th. This significant day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the rights and difficulties encountered by migrant workers and to encourage action in support of this vital community.

On Migrant Workers’ Day, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and its 94 embassies, consulates general, and permanent missions worldwide pay tribute to our overseas Filipino workers. The DFA remains dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers, irrespective of their location.

What are some of the issues faced by migrant workers?

Migrant workers often find themselves facing exploitation and abuse at the hands of their employers. They frequently experience lower wages compared to local workers, excessive working hours, and a lack of basic rights and protections. Additionally, migrant workers often become targets of discrimination and xenophobia. In certain situations, if their immigration status is irregular, they may even face detention or deportation.

Furthermore, many migrant workers encounter difficulties in accessing essential services like healthcare, education, and social security. As a result, they and their families experience poorer health outcomes, limited educational opportunities, and increased economic insecurity.

There are several factors that contribute to the heightened vulnerability of migrant workers to exploitation and abuse. Firstly, they may be unaware of their rights or fear facing consequences if they speak out against mistreatment. Moreover, they often lack the necessary social and economic support networks to advocate for their rights effectively.

What is the National Migrant Worker’s Day?

National Migrant Worker’s Day, observed every year on the seventh of June, commemorates the enactment of Republic Act No. 8042, also known as the Migrant Workers Act. This law, amended by RA 10022, was signed into law in 1995 and is aimed at improving the well-being of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), their families, and distressed Filipinos through legislative measures.

The significance of National Migrant Worker’s Day lies in recognizing and acknowledging the invaluable contributions made by migrant workers. It serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges they encounter in their pursuit of better opportunities abroad.

People from all corners of the globe have been observing and appreciating the remarkable services provided by our international workers, who are rightly regarded as modern-day heroes. Their dedication, resilience, and sacrifices contribute not only to their families but also to the development and progress of the country as a whole.

On this day, we come together to express gratitude to our migrant workers and to advocate for their rights and welfare. It is a time to reflect on the importance of supporting and protecting our fellow Filipinos who seek employment abroad, ensuring their safety, well-being, and fair treatment throughout their journey as they strive for a better future.
